She was warm, compassionate, and understanding of my situation. Her care and ability to understand me as a person and give me the dignity to express my concerns and refuse the BP med was huge.
I had a transplant. In surgery, a nerve was damaged, which was traumatic as I am very active and a snowsports director. I was in ICU and then transferred to Rehab. I was supposed to be discharged. That date was canceled due to a non-functioning kidney and a fluid pocket. I received a drain and biopsy and was expected to leave. Unfortunately, the biopsy showed rejection. The information was delivered to me over the phone in the evening, and I was transferred to a transplant floor. Needless to say, I was distraught. Upon arriving on the floor, my BP jumped 30 points due to meds, and it was the straw that broke my back. My nurse came to my rescue and was able to calm me and explain why I was on the med. Since I was not comfortable taking the med, she allowed me the control to not take it until I talked to the doctor. The next morning, she spent extra time explaining what she knew of the rejection and explained in detail the plan for treatment as orders were coming in. Fortunately, I had her for evenings the 3 days I was here. She was warm, compassionate, and understanding of my situation. Her care and ability to understand me as a person and give me the dignity to express my concerns and refuse the BP med was huge. I would not have been able to accept the idea of rejection and trust the treatments without her care.
