When Laurie Harvey was made aware that the patient would be having surgery instead of attending his graduation, she went into action. She consulted with the patient's family and informed them she wanted to do something to make this day special. Laurie then purchased a card and a special gift from the gift shop. She circulated the card throughout the department for all the staff to sign.
When the time came to move the patient from PACU to Same-Day Surgery, Laurie arranged for the staff to line the hallway and had a speaker set up to play the Marine Corp Hymn. She also ensured the patient's family was present to witness and participate in this act as the staff clapped and cheered and thanked and praised this young man for his accomplishment and service as a new Marine. The young man was then presented with the card and special gift—a small stone pocket cross.
Throughout his stay, Laurie ensured this young man received the attention and recognition he deserved as a new Recruit. Laurie's demonstration of compassionate care and commitment to extraordinary service was unknowingly videotaped by the patient's mother and shared on social media which led to national recognition for such a deserving young man by a very caring individual—Laurie.
