She gave me some tissues, rubbed my back while I cried, and just listened to me when I was telling her how mentally I’m not OK because this is becoming more frequent.
I came in to the emergency room for a sickle cell crisis. I was traveling in a couple of days, and I was also out of medication, so in order to get a refill, I was advised that I would have to be admitted. Leah wasn’t my initial nurse. She was just helping my nurse out. Staying in the hospital is a bit mentally depressing for me because it’s becoming more frequent. I started to break down when they told me that I would have to be admitted in order to get a refill for my medication. Leah stayed by my side while I was crying, and she explained to me that it would be best to stay instead of going home and potentially getting into an even bigger pain crisis because I didn’t have any medication at home. She gave me some tissues, rubbed my back while I cried, and just listened to me when I was telling her how mentally I’m not OK because this is becoming more frequent, and I feel like it’s messing with my everyday life and my school because I am a nursing student. She tried her best to help me get some medication, so I wouldn’t have to stay. She called the pharmacy and some doctors, she tried her very best but there was a problem with my insurance, so it was impossible. Being that Leah wasn’t my nurse, it meant so much to me that she went above and beyond for me because, honestly, she didn’t need to. She probably had her own patients. She showed me so much compassion, and I’m just so grateful to come across a nurse like her. Every time I see her, she always has the biggest smile and just seems so warm and welcoming. She made me feel very comfortable and helped calm my anxiety.
