Lee built a meaningful connection with the patient and family—a bond strong enough that they felt comfortable reaching out to her to discuss some of the most difficult decisions any family faces: transitioning to inpatient care or hospice.
I want to take a moment to recognize RN, Lee Cheung, for her remarkable compassion and dedication in supporting a patient’s safety. The patient had recently been discharged home and into the care of our homecare agency. Over one week, they were on our service, and it became clear to both the patient and family that their needs at home were more than the available caregivers could manage. In such a short time, Lee built a meaningful connection with the patient and family—a bond strong enough that they felt comfortable reaching out to her to discuss some of the most difficult decisions any family faces: transitioning to inpatient care or hospice. These conversations are never easy, but they are even harder when it’s about someone you love. Lee approached this delicate situation with such tenderness, advocacy, and patience, guiding the family with care and respect as they wrestled with their options. Ultimately, the family decided it was in the patient's best interest to return to the hospital for safe placement. Lee advised them to call 911, but the family requested that she be there when that moment came—a true testament to the deep trust and comfort she provided them. That is a beautiful reflection of the relationship she nurtured and the heart she brings to her work. Lee made a profound difference in this family’s life. Later in the day, after the patient was transferred to an inpatient setting, Lee received a text message from the patient's family, stating, “Hi Nurse Lee. Thank you for doing the right thing for my dad! A whole team of people from NYU called me today and kept me up-to-date. He was transferred to the nursing home across from where they live. It all worked out! You are the best!” We are so proud to be a part of the same team as Lee and are grateful she was able to be a part of this patient's care.
