Ms. Lane developed trust in the Veteran and used a calming approach to comfort him.
Recently, Ms. Lane was noticed speaking with an unhappy Veteran in the hallway by the 6th floor elevators. Leslie was there to be a listening ear for the Veteran as he spoke to her about his concerns and struggles. She was listening with compassion and validating all of the concerns he was having. She was speaking to him about his home life and what she can do to be of assistance to him. She was able to redirect the conversation and calm the Veteran. Ms. Lane demonstrated all of the ICARE values. Integrity: Ms. Lane developed trust in the Veteran and used a calming approach to comfort him. She was able to engage in the conversation to determine what next steps were needed. Commitment: Ms. Lane showed commitment by not just leaving the Veteran at the elevators. She showed commitment and stood to talk to him and learn his story. Advocacy: Ms. Lane focused on the Veteran and took an interest in what he was saying. She did not belittle him and allowed him to speak. She was completely focused on the Veteran. Respect: Ms. Lane showed respect to the Veteran during the entire conversation. She was a friendly face when the Veteran needed it. She spoke softly and calmly although the Veteran was not. Excellence: She was asking questions to strive to provide the best care that the patient needed at that time. Ms. Lane has shown a commitment to the facility throughout all of my time knowing her. She is a friendly, happy face in the elevator in the morning, greeting everyone whom she encounters. She doesn't appear to ever have a bad day here and if she does, she certainly does not show that. She is compassionate and exemplifies all of the qualities we ask for in a VA nurse. Our Veterans are lucky to have her!
