Lillie offered emotional and medical support throughout his dying process. Her actions were heartfelt and merciful, and she was able to help my father ease into his death in the most peaceful way.
My father was admitted to Ascension Seton Hays in July 2024. He had Stage 4 Esophageal Cancer and his hemoglobin was low, and his liver was in crisis. We didn't realize that he would take a tum for the worse within 2 days of his admission. One morning, we were unable to wake him and it was determined that his liver function had worsened overnight and he had become unconscious. He never woke again. That morning, we visited with the doctors about his condition and his options. It was determined that my father's health would not likely improve and we had important decisions to make for him.

That day, Lillie was his nurse in the ICU on the 2nd floor. She was present for every discussion with the doctors and listened as we heard each report. She stayed with us and prayed with us. Throughout the day, she took the most excellent care of my father - attentive in many ways. After lunch, we transferred him to hospice care so that he would have a peaceful and meaningful death. Lillie continued to be the most attentive nurse, administering medications and treatments that provided him with comfort and relief from the siege that cancer had on his body. His rapid breathing and struggle to maintain his airway finally settled, and he was finally able to rest and relax. Lillie offered emotional and medical support throughout his dying process. Her actions were heartfelt and merciful, and she was able to help my father ease into his death in the most peaceful way.

As he took his last breath, Lillie was present. She stood by our side and his and made sure that he had all he needed and prayed for him with us. I cannot thank her enough for the excellent nursing care and touches of sincere kindness that she gave us and him that day. She is a picture of what nursing care should be. I have been a nurse for 25 years and having her take care of my father was a blessing and provided such peace for him and I on this day. I cannot see how she could be more fitting for the DAISY Award - as her nursing care was beyond expectations and truly a blessing. We are so grateful for her as well as all of the outstanding and supportive staff who cared for him during his hospital stay. You are ALL providing care in the way that it should be, and I am sending a sincere thank you.
