The patient would have not survived if not the quick action and vigilance of advocation for her patients needs
Our standards of professional performance include life saving measures and notifying the appropriate members of the team for care. Lina came to the rescue and truly saved her patient's life that day. This patient's blood pressure was getting lower and lower. He clearly wasn't responding, his eyes rolled back, and a medical change was occurring rapidly. Lina notified the rapid response team and was quick with all interventions, applied blood sugar check, fluid bolus, four units of blood transfusion, and appropriate level of care transfer.
This patient needed an exploratory laparotomy for unknown internal bleeding. Due to her nurse knowledge exchange, she was able to acknowledge orders that were not anticipated or followed up on. She acted as a patient advocate requesting orders quickly. This patient's hemoglobin went from 8.9 to a 6 in only a couple of hours. This patient did not have a CBC order in the morning because it wasn't warranted, but by doing the assessment at the bedside, they were able to pick up any sudden changes.
The patient would have not survived if not the quick action and vigilance of advocation for her patients needs. This gentleman would have died. Lina provided exceptional care. She spoke to the wife and kept her in the loop with the changes that were occurring. She was compassionate and fostered the care this patient needed.
Lina is both vigilant and a critical thinker. Vigilance is essence of caring in nursing. Critical thinking is a component of a nurse who remains ready to act in an emergency or short time frame. The ability to intervene, pay attention to significant observations, listen to statement made by the patient and family members, putting the whole picture of lab values/ vital sign and the patient presentation together with necessary interventions equates to quality care. Lina provides quality care. She holds the value of nursing excellence. I appreciate her ability to recognize the clinical deterioration and respond with life saving measures. Physical assessment of the patients appearance and clinical cues triggered an response to her that something is abnormal. Due to her vigilance and ensuring the appropriate care measures, the overall outcome was achieved, and this patient survived. It is because of her that he was able to see a tomorrow.
