I would like to recognize and thank Lindsay Draft for her incredible leadership and kind heart. She stayed to care for a critical patient on SCU last night until 12:45 am and is back again this morning at 0700. Lindsay helped teach and mentor the night shift nurses in that room. She taught them and helped them get through a very busy 5 hours. Lindsay primarily took over care for that patient until he was able to get to the ICU. She worked an 18-hour shift to support her team. I value Lindsay for her clinical expertise and willingness to mentor our younger nurses. I don’t have that bedside expertise anymore and I couldn’t ask for a better supervisor and partner on the SCU. I’m thankful for the additional ADM time Lindsay has been given. She has utilized it well. She is present on the unit and is out on the floor teaching the staff and always guiding them to do the right thing. A few weeks ago, Lindsay had come in for ADM time. I didn’t even know she was here. There was a patient who became unstable and an RRT was called. Lindsay spent 4-5 hours in the room with the bedside RN until an ICU bed became available. Lindsay mentored the nurse on how to get an arterial line set up, initiate, and titrate pressors and how to care for a patient on BiPap. This is exactly what the unit needed on a busy day when the lead on the floor was busy with the checking of 4 transplants and helping with a 9-month-old baby. Lindsay ran into one of SCU’s former CNAs in the cafeteria the other day. This CNA transferred to PEDS to gain more PEDS experience before she graduates. Lindsay bought her lunch because that demonstrates the relationship she builds with her team. A former pediatric transplant patient (8 years out) came to the unit to visit Lindsay yesterday. Lindsay took care of him nearly every shift she worked. She went on to attend his birthday parties and even kept him at her house while his parents went out of town. When Lindsay walked down the hallway to greet him (he is now in high school) it was so fun to watch his face light up. He reached out and gave her the biggest hug…and she’s not a hugger. 😊 I’ve been blessed to work alongside Lindsay my entire career.
