A hard fact about nursing care is that not all our patients get better. Sometimes the privilege of nursing is in providing compassionate care, quality skills, and evidence-based knowledge to patients, families, and visitors when health is not recovered. Recently, a 27-year-old male patient, whose mother was at the bedside, suffered a cardiac event that required a transfer to the ICU and later removal from life support per the mother's request. The day he was laid to rest, the mother called the unit to voice special thanks and appreciation toLindsey Davidson who cut out the last heartbeat from his EKG strip and gave it to her to keep. This compassionate gesture was a kindness the mother treasures as she recovers from her loss.
