It's been a little while since I have been in the ER as I have been going through a lot of transitions and addressing other health matters. But I am finally doing well and ready to write to let Lindsey know how she made a big difference in my life. You say, how can an ER nurse make such a difference when you only see them for a few hours in the ER? Well, that was not the case for me. I was in the ER twice, once for 5 days and the second time for a night and she was my nurse both times. I am also deaf and do not communicate verbally. My first experience in the ER was very traumatic. I went in for fluids due to my eating disorder on my birthday. Communication was very difficult and I was in a very dark place. I felt as if people were trying to avoid communicating with me. I was very emotional and lonely. Lindsey was different than all the rest. She was so kind and tried her best to communicate with me. She spoke directly to me and wrote things down when needed. She even wrote me a birthday card to let me know that she cared and that everyone was on my side and wanted to help me. She gave me a lot of encouragement and made me feel special. I have this card sitting next to me right now as I do every day and when I feel I need encouragement, I open it up and read it again. It has been one year and 14 days since she wrote it, and it still holds such great meaning for me. She treated me like a real person, and not like a person with a disability. Lindsey stayed with me on this horrible journey and gave me a hug before leaving. She also gave me extraordinary care my 2nd time in the ER. She is truly one of the most amazing nurses and people I know. I wish others could learn from her example and show those with disabilities the same kind of respect and treatment as others. Thank you, Lindsey, for making a difference in my life. I will always keep your card close to continue to provide me encouragement!
