Her follow-through and gentle encouragement, while also recognizing some serious mental health concerns, showcased genuinely impressive nursing care.
What began as a traditional delivery quickly turned rather emergent, with our newborn daughter starting in the NICU after swallowing meconium and not breathing upon delivery. We were released from the NICU. Three days later, we were finally ready to be discharged. My husband and I were exhausted, both from having a new baby, to the emotional journey of the NICU and the stress of not being able to latch breastfeeding, and more. Lisa Birgy was our nurse that day. She took our daughter for the car seat test and, when her heart rate dropped significantly, was the one who advocated for her to go back to the NICU to make sure everything was okay. She comforted us as they ran tests and sent them to Devos. And then she changed our life. They still wanted to discharge me, but Lisa picked up on some clear mental health concerns I was having. Due to the intensity of the two NICU stays, lack of sleep, and struggles to feed, Lisa realized that I was not okay, when I did not even realize this myself. Lisa talked to me about post-partum depression and if restarting my anxiety medication would help. She advocated for us to stay in the hospital for another night, both to her charge nurse and to us. She was absolutely correct about the need for mental health support, and I didn't even realize it at the time. The next day, Lisa was not assigned to our care but was the charge nurse for the day. She still made time to see us, check in about the baby, and even walk us through car seat discharge instructions. Her follow-through and gentle encouragement, while also recognizing some serious mental health concerns, showcased genuinely impressive nursing care. She truly looked at the whole person and family during her assessment; I think many nurses may have missed the mental health component she acknowledged. Other little things made Lisa great, too; she manually took blood pressure at every check-in instead of relying on a machine. She always knew where we were and would come to the NICU to give medications if that was needed. Lisa bent over backwards for us, and that was exactly what we needed, being so overwhelmed. You have a fantastic charge nurse in Lisa, and we were blessed to have her as our nurse. I'm happy to report that I'm back on my medications, baby girl, and we are home, and things are starting to calm down for us. We have Lisa to thank directly for her advocacy and for helping us get to where we are today. If I had been discharged, or they had not advocated for a NICU stay for our daughter, we would be in a very different place right now. Thank you, Lisa, for going above and beyond.
