My 9 year old daughter, L, had day surgery to have her tonsils and adenoids removed. When she came into the recovery area, she was greeted by nurse Lisa. My daughter was definitely "out of it" as she was coming out of anesthesia, but Lisa was nothing less than amazing. From rubbing her head and whispering encouraging words in her ear to making her a yummy slushie, Lisa was her #1 cheerleader and caregiver. She made sure to explain everything to me and my husband and kept telling us how amazing our daughter was and how her recovery was the "perfect" scenario. She told my daughter a story about a photograph she took and then gave a copy to her - telling her that every time she looked at the photo of the unicorn in the clouds, that she wants her to remember how brave and amazing she was today. We spoke a lot about how she has been part of the UMass Memorial Health system for 30 years and how much she loves her job and the work that she does each day. She was 1000% attentive, compassionate, and caring throughout the entire time we were with her. She interacted with her fellow caregivers with the same respect and compassion she gave us, often telling us how the entire team made the experience so great. Lisa walked my husband out to grab the car and praised our daughter to him again. She gave me a hug before we left for the evening, and my daughter never once felt afraid in her care. Lisa made this experience unforgettable and positive and we are forever grateful that L had her for her post-op care.
