I have never met a nurse anywhere like Lisa Korzun. My T who is 13 years old has debilitating anxiety all stemming from a medical incident when she was in 3rd grade. Since then, anytime she has had to have any kind of medical procedure, no matter how "minor" it may be, I have had to medicate her so she can just make it through.
When I brought T to the Emergency Room, there was no time to pre-medicate her. I did my best to prepare her for what was coming and to console her. I could see how my efforts were not making any difference and her anxiety was increasing by the minute. T told me while we were in the room alone, "mom, I am freaking out". Her eyes were welling up with tears and she looked so afraid.
Lisa walks in and begins to prepare to insert an IV and draw some blood. T looked at her and asked her if it would be okay if she could sing so she could maybe distract her and decrease her anxiety.
Lisa asked her "what kind of songs do you like to sing?" Then, the next thing I knew, Lisa began to sing. She had the voice of an angel and my daughter was completely enamored.
No tears, no pulling away, just calm and relaxed, this is what I saw with my daughter. I can tell you I have never been more impressed than at that moment. I was the one with tears in my eyes! My other daughter had the wherewithal to start to videotape Lisa and my daughter the last couple of minutes. I posted this video on Facebook and I can't tell you how many of my family and friends have responded back to me to say this brought tears to their eyes.
I think Lisa helped to "cure" my daughter of her medical procedure fear! I was proud to have Lisa be my daughter's nurse that day in your Emergency Department. Now I can say I am proud to have her as my friend too.
