Lori had admitted a patient for surgery this summer. The patient was diabetic and insulin dependent. His blood sugar was in the 200s. During a review of medications, the patient related he stopped taking insulin due to his wife's medical condition and loss of her insurance and job. In order to save money (her insurance required a $60 co-pay), he did not fill the prescription for insulin.Lori asked several coworkers if anything was available to assist payment. Various staff members offered suggestions (call primary provider, check with case manager). Lori started by calling the patient's pharmacy to see if any programs/assistance wereavailable through drug company or pharmacy. After the pharmacy "ran" the patient's current insurance coverage, she found out the patient's current insurance had no copay! She shared this information with her patient. This patient was extremely grateful. He did not have to worry about the financial burden of his insulin. Lori exemplifies excellence in patient care, going above to assist patients.
