Dr. Colineri’s leadership raises the bar for us, with accountability but also with compassion.
Dr. Lori Colineri is not only a role model for action with compassion, but she aslo exemplifies professional nursing practice. Within her first days on site, Dr. Colineri met with all of us as leaders, rounded on patients and families, and talked with nurses at the bedside. She conducted her gap analysis always with a smile and energy that let us know that even though we have done great things in the past, and through the pandemic, our story is no longer about where we’ve been, but where we’re going. Dr. Colineri’s compassionate and inspiring leadership helped us put the trauma of the pandemic to the side and forge ahead toward a new and exciting future of professional nursing practice in a pandemic world.
One of my favorite examples was: During our first meeting she told us that we were only here because of the patients, and we have to keep them first. Dr. Colineri’s leadership raises the bar for us, with accountability but also with compassion. She made it clear in our first leadership meeting that we are to achieve nurse-executive certifications by Dec 31. She called on us, to support each other in this process- as a unified team- and then to lead our own teams with the same high standard for compassionate but professional nursing practice. Dr. Colineri leads with conviction, confidence, and courage.
In three months, she has fostered a culture of safety amongst our team and implemented initiatives that are hard but doable with her leadership. We reduced CAUTI’s to zero in her first month with her compassionate leadership guiding us in new ways of delivering care. We applied for ANCC Accreditation for Transition to Practice programs last week. We improved our patient experience scores on several units because we are rounding with purpose and engaging our patients with meaningful bedside handoff. Dr. Colineri tasked managers to engage nurses at the bedside in a new way of telephone report that reduces wait times for patients transferring between levels of care. She is driving improvements with a high bar--yet keeps the patient and family at the center of our reason for being. How compassionate is that?
Dr. Colineri fosters an environment of trust within our Nurse Exec team that allows us to support each other while having hard conversations. She models this mutual respect while developing our capacity to grow professional nursing practice beyond what we’ve known. She drives us to trust each other while we forge our future. Dr. Colineri’s energy is beyond motivating and our nurses at the bedside feed off of her presence. In true professional nursing leadership, she sought the expertise of bedside nurses for ways to reduce CAUTI’s and took action on that.
