Shortly before 2100, the ED received, through the waiting room, an unresponsive 2-month-old boy. Lori’s shift was about to end, but she entered to assist the assigned nurse with the care of this patient. Lori was, as she always is, extremely helpful in performing and supporting the care of the patient. The extraordinary performance while supporting the assigned nurse was a pleasure to witness. It did not stop there.

When the neonate and anesthesia personnel arrived to assist, Lori transitioned from care of the patient to care of the family. Lori stayed close to the patient’s distraught parents and explained the care being performed by the bedside team. In addition, as needed by the parents, Lori held their hands, put her arm around them, and several times gave the crying mother a comforting hug. Lori’s actions during this family's crisis not only exemplified but epitomized the comforting care given by nurses around the world every moment of the day. The respect and pride I felt watching Lori was almost overwhelming. Lori’s actions reflect immense credit upon herself and her nursing practice in the WellSpan Emergency Department and the nursing profession in general.
