Mabel shows the meaning of bedside nursing, which to me is attentive, safe, caring and so, so empathetic.
When I started 5 years ago in Robert Adams Ward at HCA, I already had 5 years of experience under my belt in a nursing home. During my first week, I met Mabel and I was in awe of the kind of nurse she is. Behind the cracking smile and the most infectious laugh is such a warm, intelligent, and kind woman. Mabel shows the meaning of bedside nursing, which to me is attentive, safe, caring and so, so empathetic. Mabel is fair, she can be tough when needs be too, but that toughness only shows when she believes the patient isn’t getting the most they can out of the care here. She will do everything she can for a patient before she seeks help. She has taught me so much about palliative care, which is so critical in someone’s last breaths. She has been working here for the last 21 years, and she has never lost her magic. Mabel is one of the kindest people I’ve ever had the pleasure to work with, and I am privileged that she shares so much knowledge with me and my colleagues to make our ward a better place.
