She walked over to the other side of the room to me and put her arm around me. She didn’t say anything, but she didn’t have to.
My daughter was admitted to Children’s Hospital this past Tuesday and was discharged Saturday and Kenzie was her nurse for 3 of those days. Kenzie was exceptional. Let me start by saying that we have had many visits to ETCH and although we have received great care each time, something with Kenzie was different. The difference was her empathy. I don’t think Kenzie has any idea that I am an RN of 10+ years and a nurse manager. I am always talking about patient care experience with my own staff and how important it is to "remember their why" as in why they became a nurse. I am not sure why Kenzie chose to become a nurse, but I know that GOD has her right where she needs to be, and I hope she knows that. Kenzie went above and beyond for my sweet girl.
On day 2 of my daughter's visit my daughter’s glucose reached 34 and she passed out while they were working with her. Kenzie knew what to do and remained calm the entire time. But the part that touched me the most was this.... as I was sitting in the room alone after such a scary moment, while my daughter was walking in the hall with her daddy, Kenzie popped in to check on her and I told her she was in the hall walking. Kenzie didn’t say ok I’ll come back, or I’ll check on her later, she walked over to the other side of the room to me and put her arm around me. She didn’t say anything, but she didn’t have to. She knew how worried I was about my baby without me saying and how scary the moment was for me when she passed out. Her kindness and great care make her most deserving of this award. That hug from her meant so much in that moment. She is truly an angel.
My family and I will never forget her, and the kindness shown to not only E, but to us as well. E is still talking about her days later and while we were there she would ask when Kenzie would be back and only wanted Kenzie to do her finger sticks. I think she just might be her favorite nurse ever (besides her momma of course). Kenzie, you were a blessing to us.
