Having our son 12 weeks early was the most frightening time of our lives. I still remember meeting Mackenzie as I walked into our room for our normal night visits. Even with her mask, I could sense a huge smile accompanied by deep joy. She quickly became our primary nurse because of her great care for our son and her intentionality for my husband and me. She turned into a calming presence, a sounding board, and a future friend. Even when we left the NICU to go home, I always had so much peace knowing that my son would not only receive exceptional care, but lots of LOVE. She paid attention to the details, followed up with physicians, made countless signs (in her perfect handwriting), and got to know us on a personal level. It was so hard to be separated from our two sons at home and our son in the NICU. She remembered our two sons’ names, school happenings, and extra-curricular activities which helped us to still feel connected to our lives outside the NICU. Mackenzie picked a day shift and it coincided with our discharge which seemed too good to be true. We are so blessed that we not only met her but, for her to walk alongside our family during this unknown and scary time. She is 100% a huge part of the reason our time in the NICU will be some cherished days in our family’s story. Mackenzie not only makes a difference for patients and families but for her peers and students. We witnessed her teach and train a nursing student and were amazed at what an extraordinary teacher she is. Thanks to MVH NICU for sharing this angel with us.
