We were scared to be in triage; however, Macy assured us that we were in good hands and that we would be taken care of. And, she was right!
St. Joseph’s Hospital was an absolutely wonderful place to experience the birth of my first child.
A large part of this is due to the human element — we worked with so many compassionate, caring, and excellent medical providers. One of the nurses who stands out in particular (and sets the bar high for overall care delivery) is Macy.
My wife and I first met Macy during a visit to triage about a week before I was induced. We were scared to be in triage; however, Macy assured us that we were in good hands and that we would be taken care of. And, she was right! Then, for my induction, Macy was able to work with us for a majority of my laboring experience. We were so delighted that she happened to be our nurse for this part of our experience as well! She was there for the boring parts, the exciting parts, and even the parts that were scary or uncertain.
Through it all, she maintained the utmost level of professionalism, warmth, and care for our growing family. For example, when it looked like my birth plan would be shifting and we would be moving towards a C-section, Macy ensured that she would be able to stay with us and guide us through the surgery and recovery aspects of care.
It felt amazing to have a provider advocate to stay with us, especially in undergoing a procedure we were not expecting.
More specific details of Macy’s compassionate care are how she worked to try various laboring positions during my time on the unit, how she provided details to any decision we had to make, and honored important preferences I had in my labor (for example, working closely with our doula or making sure we could utilize the tub).
Most importantly, as someone in a same-sex relationship, I was a bit nervous about being treated any differently than any other patient. Macy was exceptional in this area; she welcomed my wife with open arms and made it clear that she was not only accepting of our family, but in celebration of it as well. That made me even more comfortable as I received care in preparation for the birth of my son. Thank you, Macy!
Note: This is Macy's 3rd DAISY Award!
