Madison is an excellent RN who pays attention to her individual patients' needs. She worked with a long-term homeless patient who had a lot of anxiety about discharge. She noticed his anxiety regarding discharge after asking him what she could do to help get him ready for his upcoming (4 days away) discharge date. He made a list and she made it a priority to check off as much of the list as she could on one shift. This was her first day working with the patient who had been on the unit for months. She stepped up and made the patient an email account to get him a free cell phone from the government and had it delivered to the hospital when everyone else told him there was no way to help. She also got a primary care appointment and methadone clinic appointment set for the patient. She acted in a social work position when she was told that it was not possible by other members of the team and got it worked out. I am so proud that she thought outside of the box for our patient and looked beyond his behavior to provide excellent care. the patient's anxiety was gone.
Madison also was a comfort to another long-term patient on the unit. She would play music for the patient and sit and talk with him when he was upset. She would do this even if she was not his nurse that day. I always notice the little things that Madison does to go above and beyond for her patients and see what positive impact it makes on their lives. I want to thank this new nurse for connecting to her patients and paying attention to the things that matter to them when we are often very busy. This is what great nursing is about!
