I quickly fell into a deep sleep and woke up to Madison rocking our newborn in our room 30 minutes later. In that moment, that was absolutely what my husband and I needed.
After a very traumatic delivery experience, she was our night shift nurse on our baby's second night after being born. I had a total hysterectomy and was very limited in what I could do with getting up and down to care for my baby. My husband and I were absolutely exhausted after a long day and night of cluster feeding. I was falling asleep holding my baby, and I couldn't get up to put her in her bassinet, and my husband was finally sleeping. I called the nurse, and she quickly came into our room at 5:45am, and I asked her if she could put my baby in the bassinet. She said, “Of course! Do you mind if I hold her for a few minutes to make sure she is asleep or would you like for me to take her to the nursery so you can rest?” She had offered that a few times during our night, but she knew that I wanted my baby with us as much as possible. The nurse offered to hold her while we slept in the room, and I said, absolutely, as long as that won't interfere with your work. I told her that she could sit in the rocking chair so she didn't have to stand. I quickly fell into a deep sleep and woke up to Madison rocking our newborn in our room 30 minutes later. In that moment, that was absolutely what my husband and I needed. She cared like family by providing loving care to our infant and allowed two new exhausted parents to sleep and still keep their baby in the room. While the nurse provided excellent clinical care to us as our nurse, she also showed us love by caring like family.
