Madison called him while he was en route to check on him, patiently stayed on the phone, and gave him step-by-step directions on how to get to the hospital.
We had a 57-year-old patient in the ICU who had elderly parents who had taken care of him his entire life. The patient’s mother did not want to leave him in the hospital alone. She was not getting much sleep, was getting confused, and did not have food, medications, or a change of clothing with her. Madison spoke with her and made her feel at ease about leaving her son in our care while she went home for a good night’s sleep. We called her husband who sounded stressed about having to come get his wife from the hospital, as he had left just a few hours beforehand and did not drive on the interstate. The team offered to pay for a taxi to get her home, but he insisted on coming to get her. Madison called him while he was en route to check on him, patiently stayed on the phone, and gave him step-by-step directions on how to get to the hospital. When he got to the hospital, he was visibly worried about driving back home since it was getting dark, and he was not comfortable driving on the interstate. Madison ended her shift and had the elderly man follow (very slowly) her down Loyola, to Veterans, to Williams, then to Airline until he was comfortable driving the rest of the way home. Madison’s compassion for not only our patients but their families is nothing short of inspiring.
