I had a patient who was refusing to have an IV placed, even though her condition was deteriorating. I managed to convey to her the importance of IV access should an emergency occur and the patient conceded although she was very anxious and upset. I phoned anesthesia to see if they could possibly assist due to the patient's emotional state, and MAJ Froehle said he would be happy to come and place one even though it was busy and the beginning of his shift. He arrived promptly with all the tools needed to make it as smooth as possible, including a Doppler scanner and lidocaine. He was very personable and professional and put the patient at ease immediately. He placed the new IV quickly, explaining the procedure the whole time. He even ended the encounter with a joke and had us laughing before leaving the room. I was very impressed with how much time he took to make the process as stress and pain-free as possible. It was obvious he cared about the patient as a person as well as really enjoying his profession. When he was gone from the room the patient stated: "he was really impressive, he can do my IV anytime!"
This is how we want our patient service to be! He was definitely the hero of the night for both the patient and me.
