Mallory embodies what a nurse should be, and I am so incredibly thankful for her!
I went to L&D in active labor with my second son, G. By the time I had been triaged, the day shift nurse (Mallory) had to have just started her shift since it was 0700. She jumped into action, asking all the questions and getting everything ready without complaining. I can be indecisive about a lot of things, but I knew I wanted to try to deliver unmedicated and needed to be able to get up and move around.
Mallory made sure I was able to do just that and provided me with anything I needed, from a portable fan to a ball to bounce on, and even provided counter pressure when the back labor kicked in. I made it to 9cm, and my doctor was strongly encouraging me to let them break my water to speed things up. I was hesitant because this immensely increased the strength of my contractions during the delivery of my first son. I discussed this with Mallory, and she encouraged me to do what I wanted and provided me with the facts. She was showing the true definition of being an advocate. I decided to move forward with my water being broken and continued to labor standing up and moving around.
With each contraction thereafter, I continued to lose fluid, which would run down my legs. Mallory grabbed the washcloths and, without me asking, did her best to wipe my legs and try to keep me clean. When it was time to push, my husband and Mallory helped me onto the bed because I could hardly move from the pain. She explained everything clearly and felt like a close friend cheering me on when it was delivery time.
Afterward, she noticed that I was bleeding more than normal and made sure to notify the doctor. She helped me get cleaned up and did not make me feel bad about getting blood all over the floor. When we made it to the mother-baby unit, I realized she had captured some pictures on my phone, and I will cherish them forever! She was, hands down, the best nurse ever, and I feel like she played a vital role in helping me accomplish my goal of delivering my baby naturally. As a nurse myself, I can say that Mallory embodies what a nurse should be, and I am so incredibly thankful for her!
