Malorie Elliott was nominated by a patient and his fiancé who felt that Malorie provided compassionate, professional, and excellent care during a very scary time. She took time to explain the reasons for the medications being given and made sure the patient and family understood. Malorie was never too busy to answer questions and always made sure the needs were met of everyone in the room. Malorie went beyond just caring for her patient when she reminded the patient's fiancé that she needed to take care of herself too. She reminded the fiancé that she needed to take some time away from the hospital room, even if it was just a short walk.
When the patient needed a cardiac cath, the procedure wasn't scheduled to be performed until that evening, so the doctor said the patient could have lunch, but when they called to order lunch, he had already been put down as "nothing by mouth." Malorie took time to make sure her patient got his lunch ordered and was able to eat before his time was up prior to the procedure. Once he came back from the cardiac cath, Malorie explained to the fiancé that the cath needed to be checked every 15 minutes and she would make sure it got done, even if they had to have someone sit with the patient during shift change.
Malorie's clinical manager says Malorie is an excellent team player and a mentor to her co-workers. She is very personable, caring, and takes great pride in her profession. He also says that Malorie is "the life of the party" and he's proud to be her CM. The critical care clinical manager says Malorie takes time to make her patients feel like they are her only patient. She is smart and has great critical thinking skills. She is cheerful and always a team player. Malorie is also curious and asks questions to help her become the best nurse she can be. The director of Critical Care says Malorie is on the road to becoming an excellent critical care nurse and leader.
Because of Malorie's compassionate and caring efforts, her patients experience a level of care that exemplifies the impact nurses have in creating an environment where patients and families feel at home.
