My husband was admitted to ASLMC to have a cranioplasty done. Marcos was his nurse a few times on the 4th floor and was great; he did his job very well. On this particular day, he went well beyond what I would have expected. A high temp of 102.5 was somewhat ignored by the nurse overnight which resulted in me sitting up all night to make sure my husband was okay. I restlessly waited for shift change and luckily it was Marcos who took over. I informed him of the overnight temp and he immediately took action. He listened to what I had to say about what I thought was happening because I have been with my husband in the hospital every day for over three months. I have seen him at his best and worst throughout this tragedy. So many people ignore my concerns and input and I have to request, advocate and all but call the President of the hospital before people take action. That was not the case with Marcos. Even after an aide took an incorrect temp that was normal (twice) I told him that I thought my husband was septic because he has been before and these symptoms and behavior were the same. Marcos retook his temp the first time and it was 103.5, the second was 104.2 but before that, he had already started the sepsis protocol. He believed me and treated my husband appropriately because it was clear that he was very sick. He stayed in our room for the majority of the day to ensure that he was being cared for appropriately. When I started to freak out, he stayed calm and calmed me down but called rapid response to ensure that he was okay. He was so honest and frank with me about what was happening and what the doctors were saying, which is what I needed! Marcos was scheduled to work from 7am-7pm that day, but at 8:30 pm he was still standing in my husband's room holding ice packs and cold towels on my husband to keep his temp down. When he finally went to leave, he told me that the nurse from the night before, the one that did not act appropriately in response to his temp, was taking over and told me what I needed to do if I felt that I was being ignored. I shared with him that I did not want that, I had no energy to go back and forth with a nurse about my husband's care so he went and talked to whomever and came back with a nurse who was just as much of a rock star as he is. I am so grateful to him for that night because he helped to assure me that it was going to be ok. He listened to me and accepted and acted on my input. My husband was/is very sick and he has been for longer than I would have ever imagined but on this night, the care that he received was phenomenal and that deserves to be recognized.
