Marfil is an exact example of what we call an extra-ordinary nurse! Any nurse is expected to be nice and respectful to his/her patients, but Marfil surpasses all the expectations. Today, Marfil was taking care of a schizophrenic patient, who was being abusive and non-compliant with the medical care. I watched Marfil take care of this patient all day. I never heard her complain about her assignment or about the way she was being treated. She handled the difficult situations with this patient with patience, compassion, integrity and respect. It was about 1600 when I heard a scream coming from the room. Marfil had been punched by this patient. As I saw the tears coming down her face, I noticed the magnitude of her excellence. Even during this moment, she focused on calming the patient and maintaining his care. I was astonished of such selflessness.
Marfil is the extraordinary nurse that we look up to. She is a role model, a leader, a team player and an advocate for her patients. When security came to help, they asked her if she wanted to press charges and with tears in her eyes she said, "I am not pressing charges on a schizophrenic patient."
Marfil still has the spark that every student nurse has in the beginning of her/his career. This is the spark we all need to keep alive within us, no matter the experience.
