his nurse’s unwavering commitment to her patients, proactive problem-solving, and compassionate care make her truly deserving of the DAISY Award.
I am honored to nominate this nurse for the DAISY Award. She consistently demonstrates Parkland’s ICARE values, and her actions over the past two weeks exemplify what it means to be a true Parkland nurse.
In one instance, a patient struggled with their incentive spirometry due to uncontrolled pain, leading to the need for IPPV. When the Respiratory Therapist attempted the treatment, the patient’s pain remained unmanaged. This nurse immediately advocated for the patient by contacting the provider, requesting a more effective pain management plan, and administering the updated medications. She then ensured the Respiratory Therapist could reattempt the treatment. Recognizing a language barrier, she stayed at the bedside to translate and guide the patient until the respiratory treatment was successfully completed. According to the Respiratory Therapist, her advocacy and dedication prevented the patient’s respiratory condition from deteriorating further.
On another occasion, while passing a patient’s room, she was approached by a concerned family member about the patient’s significant pain. Although she was not the assigned nurse, she assessed the situation, noted the patient was in distress, and immediately took action. Unable to reach the primary nurse, she escalated the matter by calling the charge nurse, RAT team, and provider after detecting hypotension. Her prompt response and decisive actions likely prevented the patient’s condition from worsening.
This nurse’s unwavering commitment to her patients, proactive problem-solving, and compassionate care make her truly deserving of the DAISY Award. She is an exemplary role model for all Parkland nurses.
