The patient began to cry and stated that the injection was pain-free and that no one had ever taken the time to listen and help him.
This nurse is an extraordinary person and clinician. She demonstrates several ICARE qualities on a day-to-day basis. This nurse comes to work and is always willing to help not just our patient population but her peers. She is a very resourceful nurse who demonstrates compassion and respect with every patient she encounters. She is a true advocate for her patients and will always take the time to ensure her patients' needs are met and all of their questions are answered. This Nurse had a nurse visit where the patient was incorrectly injecting his diabetic medication. What started as a routine blood pressure and after speaking to the patient, this nurse was able to identify a problem with the patient incorrectly administering his diabetic medication. The patient expressed to the nurse that he was having pain in the injected area, and when assessing the patient, she quickly determined he was injecting in the wrong area, causing the patient to get bumps in that area (which was the groin area). This nurse consulted with her provider who evaluated the patient and placed additional orders to ensure no damage was done to the area. The nurse took the time to properly teach the patient how to inject his medication and answered any questions the patient had. The patient was very grateful to the nurse and expressed that he felt comfortable injecting his medication at the end of the nurse's visit. She later followed up with this patient, who reported that he no longer had any concerns or complaints about the affected area. She has been a nurse for 12 years, and her dedication to her patients shows in the pride she takes in her work.

Maria is a servant leader who provides care that is executed with compassion and professionalism. Some of her patients often arrive several hours after their scheduled appointment time; however, Maria advocates to ensure that all patients are seen. Two weeks ago, Maria was the assigned nurse to care for a patient needing post-hospital diabetes follow-up. At the visit, the patient verbalized understanding of all of the instructions, only to walk in two days later. The patient informed Maria that he was in so much pain and could no longer administer his insulin due to "knots" forming. Though he was not scheduled, Maria created a nurse visit to determine why the patient was in pain. Upon entering the room, Maria noticed that the patient was pointing to his groin instead of his abdomen. She asked the patient to show her the "knots" and discovered that the patient had been injecting the insulin into his groin transdermal for the last 10 years as per previous instructions. Maria notified the provider and provided patient education of how to correctly administer his insulin. A dose of insulin was administered by the patient in the abdomen. The patient began to cry and stated that the injection was pain-free and that no one had ever taken the time to listen and help him. This is a testament to Maria's character and values. Instead of referring the patient to the Today Clinic, she listened.
