I nominated Maribel Chipelo, RN, of the Radiology Special Procedures department because of her exceptional interpersonal skills with patients, family members and colleagues. Maribel demonstrates qualities of a nurse with true service to her team and patients. Anyone in our department would validate my statement if asked.

Maribel demonstrates true compassion on a daily basis. I started in the Radiology Special Procedures department 10 years age and Maribel was my preceptor. I was a seasoned nurse, but with a completely different background. Maribel recognized that this was all new to me and navigated me through the process in a detailed and regimented manner that helped me improve and be a better nurse. Maribel sets a high standard of practice, but with humility and respect. A leadership position became available in our department, but when I asked Maribel about her interest, she declined so I applied with her blessing.

Maribel is a true role model, treating each patient as though she were caring for one of her family members. For example, we have patients that we see regularly in our department for various device changes. One of our patients is developmentally disabled and has a very concerned family in attendance. The device this patient required was one we no longer carried, causing the family stress level to increase. Maribel went into action researched vendors and updated the parents daily on her progress in the situation. Her dedication to this patient and family was rewarded by gratitude and thanks that Maribel would go above and beyond to meet their need.

Multidisciplinary collaboration is a daily occurrence in Radiology, but Maribel is a catalyst of positive teamwork, respecting her colleagues and receiving their respect in return. All of our colleagues would agree unanimously that Maribel is the most compassionate and deserving nurse in our department.
