I was taken by ambulance due to severe abdominal pain and underwent surgery for a perforated bowel. Once I was out of surgery, I was brought to my room. Nurse Marie Barr went above and beyond for me and her other patients. One night, Marie had multiple critical patients who needed her care for extended periods. She knew I was struggling emotionally and dealing with pain. Even with a heavy caseload, she came to my room, asked how I was doing, and if I needed anything. I broke down and cried because I was in pain and wanted my NG tube removed, as I couldn't swallow or barely talk. Marie sat with me, talked to me, held my hand, gave me a hug, and said, "I promise everything will be okay, and if you need anything, just hit your call light, and I will be here with you as needed." Marie prioritized her patients above her own needs, even skipping lunch that night. I also had her another day, and she took time again to comfort me. Marie even said, "I will advocate for you regarding the removal of your NG tube tomorrow morning before I leave," which she did, and it was removed that day. Marie has a huge heart and cares deeply about her patients, always putting them first. Just knowing Marie was there made my hospital stay a little easier.
