Her questions reflected her knowledge of my medical record, and her behavior showed she really cared about me as a patient. There was little doubt that she cared for me as a human being, not just another “patient.” For me, the fact that she cared was as important, as much as any other issue.
During my first visit to see te doctor, Ms. Fitts was my and my accompanying wife’s Primary Care contact at Mather VA. She carefully and very professionally took a quick history. Her questions reflected her knowledge of my medical record, and her behavior showed she really cared about me as a patient. There was little doubt that she cared for me as a human being, not just another “patient.” For me, the fact that she cared was as important, as much as any other issue.
Ms. Fitts was able to discuss each of my chronic conditions with clarity and how the medications were important. She also pointed out the fact that there were possibilities that certain OTC drugs could interact with the prescribed drugs and discussed an example.
Ms. Fitts immediately thanked me for my service, recognizing from my record that I had been awarded a Purple Heart. It was the sincerest “thank you” I had heard to date. She carefully listened to what I had to say about the purpose of my visit, collected all the relevant information needed by the doctor and then passed me to the doctor — he had a few questions after reading her notes and evaluation.
Both Ms. Fitts and the doctor immediately recognized that I was a complicated patient that required several referrals, as well as some immediate testing to ensure prescriptions were working and at the correct dose. Both talked and objectively came to major decisions on how my care would be handled.
Both the doctor and Ms. Fitts spoke to each other in a productive, personal way. They engaged both myself and my wife to assess we fully understood where I was in my care, and what I needed to do in the future to both improve the quality of care in my life, as well as to assure all preventive care issues were covered.
The manner in which Ms. Fitts and the team provided me care was professional and made me feel cared about, while making me feel actually better and more at ease about my health care issues. Involving my wife was very important, letting her understand future treatments and expected outcomes. We both left feeling more knowledgeable about what we needed to do to enhance good healthcare outcomes.

Having spent many years in healthcare, the way her team worked as a multidisciplinary team was textbook, and Nurse Fills always, always made a point that I had a full understanding of the issues.
