I am writing my husband's story to thank Mary for her few nights of kindness and compassion she had for H during his stay at Borgess Medical Center for a broken hip. H brought with him other medical problems which were hindering and prolonging his recovery - diabetes, heart transplant peritoneal dialysis, hand and feet neuropathy, gout and many allergies to medications. The doctors, nurses, aides and even H became frustrated with his response to treatment. This caused a lot of tension between caregivers and patient. Then along came Mary. I'll never forget the night she walked into the room and said, "Hello. My name is Mary and I am here to help you, H. What can I do for you, my friend?" H opened up to Mary, telling her the good, bad and ugly care he had been given thus far. The three or four nights she was caring for H, Mary answered most of his calls. She even came in to reposition him every two hours without being asked to and kept clean, dry bedpads under his naked, bedsore bottom without complaining. She would stop into the room often when passing to see if he were okay or needed anything. Mary truly treated H as though he were a dear 'friend' in need. Her kindness and compassion were and still are deeply appreciated. May God bless Mary for the rest of her life and then some!
