One nurse who consistently looks for the unseen is Mary Fernald. She understands our community's unique needs and how these impact the health and well-being of the patients we see. Her holistic approach is such a blessing to our patients. With every encounter she makes with her patients, she goes above and beyond the surface to get to know them and their needs, and she provides services to help when necessary. She treats everyone with respect and treats everyone the same. She listens and is nonjudgmental. She has arranged rides, gotten patients rehab for substance abuse, arranged for food, and medications to name just a few. She understands that there is often more to the patient’s story. Even though she works in a very busy emergency department, she doesn’t let that stop her from getting the patients what they need, no matter the time it will take. She has role modeled this to her peers and often is asked to help them do the same for their patients. She is a wonderful nurse and a valuable member of the Bridgton ED and community, and she reinforces patient-centered care daily.
