Mary is an exceptional nurse, teammate, and patient advocate. The ever-changing environment of the Emergency Department (ED) can present a unique challenge, and it takes an exceptional personality to maintain a positive attitude and a focused sense in order to provide consistent and excellent patient care amid these demands. Not only does Mary seamlessly navigate through a myriad of patient conditions and challenges, she does this with an intoxicating energy and spirit of comfort. She is the embodiment of the word compassion. This compassionate characteristic extends to both her colleagues and her patients. It is heartwarming to observe Mary at the bedside of a scared child, an anxious adult, or a sick, elderly person. She takes the time to listen to their concerns and then does whatever she can to alleviate them. Mary makes a difference in people's lives because she is genuine. Patients have reported that the reason why they love Placentia-Linda is because of her.

Most recently, Mary cared for a patient who ended up staying in the department for three days. Not once did Mary's warmth and compassion for the patient falter. She worked diligently with her and provided the crucial comfort and safety necessary during this time of turmoil. However, it was not only the tasks Mary completed to ensure the patient's well-being but it was in the manner in which she delivered her care. Mary was exceptionally gentle and understanding to the patient, which in turn was lifesaving.

Here are the patient's words:

"I came into the ER the morning after I tried to commit suicide. Mary was the first nurse I saw and was so kind, sympathetic, and caring. She explained to me what was going on because I was very scared. She took the time to talk to me and get to understand why I was here. She probably doesn't know it but she was saving my life. She made me feel cared for, that I was worth something. I haven't felt cared for or worth something in a long time. Over the next 3 days that I stayed in the ED, Mary always checked on me, asked me how I was, if I needed anything, and if I did, she was right off to get it. She always did it with a smile and she didn't make me feel like a burden, like I often do.

When she was around, I felt safe. She showed compassion and I never felt as if she was judging me for what I did. Just the smile she gave me every time she walked by the room put me in a better mood. Thank you, Mary, for all you did and do for your patients. You are truly amazing."

You are amazing, Mary, and we are extremely grateful for your service and are privileged to call you our colleague. Congratulations!!!
