I was a patient at Spohn South from October 21st - October 27th. I had MRSA in five wounds on both my legs. It was extremely painful and I could hardly walk. I ended up having surgery on Tuesday October 25th to drain the wounds. Physically the experience was very unpleasant. As I said, I had a lot of ongoing pain and, after surgery I also became sick from the anesthesia.
With that being said, I just wanted to let you know that as horrible as I felt physically in the hospital...the actual care I received was fantastic. ALL of my nurses were great! I wish I could remember all of their names, but some of them I had during the night shift, or while I was really medicated, and unfortunately I can't recall those. However, some of the stand-outs were Fe, MJ, Charo (nights), Sharon (nights) and Ashley. But they all treated me with compassion, respect, and kindness. Being a nurse myself, I know how busy the job can be - so I tried not to ring for the nurse unless I really needed something. When I did buzz for help, my call was always immediately answered and help usually came shortly thereafter. I never felt like I was a bother to the staff! Whether I was asking for pain medicine or an extra pillow - everyone I came into contact with was lovely.
One moment, I would really like to point out is my first wound care session after surgery. Even with morphine and Lortab, it was really, really painful. I was crying and shaking but I knew that it had to be done. It was really rough on me. My husband was there holding my hand and comforting me....but so was MJ! MJ was in the room with me, holding my hand, and she genuinely looked like she had compassion for me and that she felt bad for what I was going through. I have been a patient in a few hospitals and I've also had family as patients in a few hospitals...and I have never seen or had another nurse hold my hand during something painful and really try to comfort me in a human way...not just because it was their job. This has really stuck with me since I left the hospital and I have told many people about it. MJ was a wonderful nurse and really left an impression on me by doing that. I think you are very fortunate to have her as part of your staff!


Being a patient in the hospital was hard. I was away from my family; I was hurting hurting, sick, frustrated, sad and many other emotions. But thankfully, I was taken care of by such a wonderful group of nurses, techs, and other staff who i felt were patient with me and had compassion for me...and that made it so much easier! I was just overwhelmed by the courtesy of the staff. The unit I stayed on is definitely doing something right!
