And then there is Mary in the ICU who daily was sitting up a patient on the edge of the bed. Not just any patient, but a 6-foot 4-inch 350-pound patient who has no muscle control on their left side.
So often I hear that nurses are too busy to walk patients or get patients to a chair. And then there is Mary in the ICU who daily was sitting up a patient on the edge of the bed. Not just any patient, but a 6-foot 4-inch 350-pound patient who has no muscle control on their left side. Mary could have found so many excuses why not to mobilize the patient. However, she quietly did her job because she is an outstanding nurse. What is more impressive, is she does this with little to no praise. When we as therapists get patients up, there are a lot of thanks and praise for us moving patients; Mary was doing this every day with no recognition because it was important to the patient's recovery.
