I would like to recognize Mary Kay Carroll, RN, for the many outstanding qualities that she offers to AH&W. Working side-by-side with a nurse like Mary Kay, makes me want to be a better nurse and human being! She is kind, thoughtful and extremely hard working. She makes decisions that go above and beyond caring for associates and offering team support when workflows are high. Mary Kay is able to care for associates with insight and best practice for safety. I know that she sees the greater good and works tirelessly to do whatever is required on a daily basis. Associates are well cared for when complicated cases present and Mary Kay will always offer resources that help to calm and care for all we serve. She really represents the Mission, Vision and Value system we as an organization stand for. I am lucky to work with such a high practicing nurse.
When I started working with Mary Kay in Associate Health a little over 2 years ago, I could immediately sense her compassionate, calm, patient, and professional demeanor. She demonstrates these characteristics every day with all those she comes in contact with. I would like to share a few of the many stories that exemplify these characteristics and how she goes above and beyond.
We had an employee who had many stressors in their life and was having a difficult time at work. They came to the office and Mary Kay sat down with them for several hours allowing them to talk while she just listened. Mary Kay had to involve several other departments during this interaction (security, social work, their leader, our leader), but she remained calm throughout the whole ordeal. The associate was so grateful Mary Kay was able to give her undivided attention while they were struggling and was able to help them through their difficult time.
We have had a few employees who have required ergonomics evaluations. Mary Kay visits their work station and observes what needs to be provided for their comfort. She has often searched areas and rooms for unused equipment that may be put to use saving Ascension money and helping the employee with equipment that suits their needs.
Many associates come back to work with complicated issues. She handles each of these on a personal and individual basis always communicating updates with the employee.
She is always willing to answer my never-ending questions even on her days off when she is home. Her wealth of knowledge in Associate Health is so vast, I learn something new from her every day. She has recently joined the AAOHN professional organization to increase her expertise in our specialized profession. She seeks out all resources until she finds an answer when an answer is unknown.
On a personal level, she is always more concerned about everyone else around her, selfless. She sacrifices her lunches at times to help with employees returning to work or vaccinations. She comes in on her days off to run flu clinics and fit test clinics. She always allows me to take the vacation I need/want without a question. She always asks about my life and my daughter and has helped through some difficult times with endless support.
Mary Kay is the epitome of our Mission, Vision, Values of Ascension. I am blessed to be able to work with her in our department every day.
