They moved the beds close together and joined Dad's left hand with Mom's right hand.
My family's life was forever changed a few days before Thanksgiving when my father-in-law and mother-in-law developed symptoms of COVID. They were hospitalized at another facility, but their health declined to the extent that we felt as a family and me being an employee at MetroHealth we wanted them transferred here to Metro. I'll be honest, at this point, I felt if anyone could save them, the physicians and staff at MetroHealth could. We just weren't ready to give up. The providers and the nurses that cared for them were both outstanding from a clinical standpoint and incredibly compassionate to Mom and Dad; as well as to me and my family. I called at least twice a day to check-in and they were patient and answered all of my questions. Eventually, we made the difficult decision to take Dad off of life support. It's important to mention that Mom and Dad prior to getting sick had never been apart for 60 YEARS! It was hard for us as a family to see them apart. Two nurses, with help from their co-workers, moved Dad into Mom's room. They moved the beds close together and joined Dad's left hand with Mom's right hand. At that point, they removed life support from Dad and a few hours later he passed peacefully holding his sweetheart's hand. The impact this gesture had on our family has been incredible. Mom followed Dad two days later. To say losing both of them has been difficult is an incredible understatement, but the grace and mercy shown to Mom and Dad as well as to me and my family is something I'll never forget. For me personally, as a nurse at Metro, it has redefined the phrase "work family" and demonstrates truly outstanding care and compassion. These nurses will never be forgotten.
