I want to take this opportunity to nominate Megan Honeycutt for the prestigious DAISY Award. Even if my family had not noticed this pamphlet for nomination for this program, I still would have sent this letter acknowledging and thanking Megan for her extraordinary care, compassion and love shown to my mother while receiving care at Mercy Springfield, as well as my family while remaining bedside with my mom.
My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer, and since then she had multiple procedures, surgeries, chemo, and radiation. She battled this horrible disease courageously for five years, but several weeks prior to being admitted to Mercy, the effects of the disease, as well as the treatments, caused her body to show signs that her battle with cancer was nearing completion. Although her physical body was weakening, her spirit and faith in God remained as strong as ever as she knew and continued to remind my family that "it was ok, God is in control."
Megan cared for my mother nearly every day as she was picking up some extra shifts before she would be leaving for her own personal time off. In fact, her upcoming "vacation" was scheduled the day after mom was discharged, and Megan was to travel to Iowa to help care for one of her family members who would be recovering from surgery. Megan definitely has a servant's heart.
Besides providing superior and professional medical care, Megan provided special emotional sensitivity and compassion that my family and I had rarely experienced but truly needed during Mom's final days. Megan took care of my mom as if she were one of her own family members. Although Megan had other patients she was caring for during her shifts, she made us feel like Mom was her only patient as she would patiently listen to stories about Mom's life before and after cancer.
Mom went on to be with the Lord at our home the day after she was discharged from Mercy. Although these last days were very difficult on my mom and my family, Megan's care and love made this process just a little easier.
Megan is an excellent nurse and person. Mercy should be proud to have her as part of its team in Springfield.
