My daughter was suffering from Lyme Disease. She has undergone a lumber puncture and several IV sticks. Her anxiety was almost uncontrollable. She was having night terrors throughout the night and Meghan never left our side. She came in an instant every time I called with another episode. My daughter was so upset and Meghan had beautiful patience with her. She never rushed her, constantly reassured her, and gained her trust. She not only made sure she was safe medically by keeping in constant contact with the doctors, but she knew that her emotional health was just as important.
Meghan realized her anxiety worsened the more doctors and nurses entered the room. Meghan then became the only person other than the doctors to come into the room. She did the vital checks, answered all calls (and we called out many times throughout the night), and even drew her labs when she needed more bloodwork and she was terrified of the lab technician. Meghan not only calmed her, but she calmed me too. She really took care of both of us.
Meghan came back before her shift ended that morning with surprises for her when she woke up. She has arts and crafts sets, coloring pages, and crayons. She also made her a calendar on a folder with printouts of my daughter's favorite things - Star Wars, unicorns, rainbows, etc. In the file was a calendar for her to check off each day until she finished her medicine. Meghan knew that she was upset about taking her medicine and found a way to make it fun and not as scary.
When my daughter needed to take her medicine, Meghan took it one step at a time with her. She has unending patience as it took more than thirty minutes for her to swallow one pill. She kept talking her through, letting her express her fears, and giving her choices and control until she finally took her pill. Meghan then praised her and built her up so she would be ready to take it again the next time.
I think this was definitely shown when Meghan took over her care completely. I know this made extra work on her and she just said she was doing what was best for my daughter. Meghan is eight months pregnant and I was so impressed with how each time she spoke to her, she knelt on the ground to be on her level. I know that wasn't easy or comfortable, but she knew making her comfortable was her main priority. We are so thankful for her. I don't think I could have made it through the night without her by our side.
