Witnessing one's young child battle sickness and undergo surgery is undoubtedly one of the most terrifying experiences. Recently, my husband and I made the difficult decision to take our four-year-old daughter to Children’s ED due to persistent high fevers and intense leg pain. The night was agonizing for her, with no relief from the pain, and as we arrived at the ED, we received the distressing news that she had developed a leg infection requiring surgery. The feeling of helplessness was overwhelming as our little one grappled with pain and confusion about the unfolding events. For any parent, it is an indescribable ordeal. Admitted to the 8th floor, we faced another sleepless night filled with our daughter's relentless pain. Each passing second on the clock seemed to emphasize our anxiety.

The subsequent day brought our daughter's surgery, fortunately without complications. However, her struggle persisted even during the healing process. Our daughter would react with fear whenever someone entered the room, expressing her apprehension about the impending discomfort. Enter Meghan, our day nurse, a true beacon of light amid the darkness.

It quickly became evident that Meghan possessed a remarkable gift. Her choice of words and calm presence had an extraordinary effect on our daughter. While others encountered screams during attempts to flush our daughter's IV, Meghan approached it differently, assuring our daughter, "I am just going to give your tube a drink of water. I will go really slow." The immediate relaxation in our daughter was nothing short of miraculous. What might seem like a small act meant the world to our family and significantly altered our trajectory. Recognizing my own fatigue, illness, and struggles, Meghan consistently checked in, offering words of encouragement. The look in her eyes conveyed genuine care, instantly lifting my spirits. Meghan seemed to appear at the exact moments we needed her most, especially when our daughter needed her.

While nursing may be a profession for some, it is undeniably a calling for Meghan. I will forever remember her and am profoundly grateful for her presence during our darkest hours. Meghan, your shift may have been routine for you, but for us, you carried our burden and guided us through. Thank you for making a lasting difference in our lives.
