It is actions like Mei-Ling's that make it easier to take care of our patients because we are able to take care of them together.
Mei-Ling joined our EJCH ICU family a short time ago. Since that time, she has been nothing short of amazing. She comes in early before her shift (before clocking in) and researches her patients so that she can give the best level of care and she does this all with a smile on her face. She is very caring for her patients and educates each one (or their Care Partner) on each procedure, medication, or treatment that she delivers. While doing this, she actively seeks out each nurse on the unit, inquiring if we need help or assistance. She replenishes medications on beeping pumps, turns patients who need it, and assists them to the bathroom or puts them on the bedpan, all without you knowing or asking. When there is a surge of admits during a shift, Mei-Ling takes a third critical patient without grumbling, negativity, or missing a step in delivering excellent care to her other patients.
Last month I was hesitant to give her an admit because I knew how hard she had been working. Unfortunately, it had to be done. When I gave her the admission, not only did she willingly take it, but she did so with a smile and even thanked me! This last surge of COVID has been especially rough for us here in the ICU, but we could not care for our patients without being a family and caring for each other. It is actions like Mei-Ling's that make it easier to take care of our patients because we are able to take care of them together.
All of these actions are enough for her to be nominated, but on top of all of that, she has picked up extra shifts to help out on the unit in order to make sure that she does her part when we are short-staffed, all the while with a young family at home. We are truly blessed to have Mei-Ling as part of our team. She is an excellent nurse and a great team player. We all love her. I'm proud to work with her and want to show her outwardly how much we appreciate her. She is a true DAISY Nurse.
