Melisa recently cared for two patients in the ICU with very poor prognoses. She was challenged with the task of explaining the severity of the current illness and the different options available to the families. She was able to convey the importance of quality of life that the patients would not experience due to their illness.

One patient was 94 years old, she learned from the family that the patient was a very independent person and lived alone with some assistance from her family. The patient, prior to the hospitalization was very adamant that she wanted to live independently. The patient had fallen and was suffering from multi-organ system failure. Melisa took the time to learn about the patient and helped guide the family to a decision regarding the patient's care. She was able to discuss the pros and cons of the different options. In the end the patient was admitted to hospice. She made possible a peaceful and comfortable passing for this patient.

Her other patient was also admitted to hospice but was deteriorating quickly. She made a point to explain to the family step by step what to expect during this transition. She drew from her own personal experience with the passing of her father. She understood the uncertainty that the family was facing and was able to express her empathy during this difficult time.

Melisa showed an extraordinary amount of compassion and patience in dealing with end of life decisions and care.
