Melissa was caring for a patient whose mother was unable to be present at night. This patient was the only survivor of a triplet birth and he was sick. Melissa did not hesitate to treat this child as if he were her own. She exceeded Beaumont Standards and was exemplary of the Beaumont Mission. This patient became her family. His mother was frequently updated throughout the night and Melissa was able to establish a positive relationship with both the patient and mother. The mother would hug Melissa tightly and squeal with joy when she saw that Melissa would be there to care for her child. Melissa was compassionate and empathetic in her delivery of care. She was able to connect with the patient and the family. She established a firm foundation of trust and respect. She did not hesitate to advocate for her patient. She demonstrated exceptional nursing care. When her patient had a moment when he was not doing well, Melissa was the epitome of calm and collective, while quickly critically thinking and notifying the appropriate staff and stayed right at her patient's bedside. She was able to make a bad situation better. She updated the patient's mother of the event and was able to easily calm and reassure her. Melissa was a huge component in ensuring this patient would have positive outcomes because of her excellent patient and family-focused care.
