Because it was important for this child to hydrate, Meredith went to Kroger to get the Lactaid milk that he needed.
There was a 2-year-old on Pediatrics who was in need of PO hydration. This child was only drinking water and milk. However, the child was lactose intolerant and was only able to drink Lactaid milk. Our organization does not carry lactose-free milk in the cafeteria. Because it was important for this child to hydrate, Meredith went to Kroger to get the Lactaid milk that he needed. While many nurses would have told this family that they would have to leave their child’s bedside to get the milk or have a friend or family member bring some in, Meredith got into her car and went to Kroger.
This family will probably never know that the milk didn't come from the cafeteria. They may never know that the milk came from an outside source, but I know. I think that Meredith is one of those unsung heroes of NGHS. She often flies under the radar. She is always available to help her co-workers. She jumps in to do admissions, helps with procedures, and often sacrifices her own lunch to make sure her team gets theirs. Meredith never wants the spotlight, but I think she deserves it. Going to the store for this child, not even on her unit, shows that she has a heart for nursing. She truly represents the statement "In All We Do".
