I first met Michael when my husband, C, was transferred to Penn around 2:30 AM. C had some V-tach and VT storms and needed an ablation. Since I had no place to stay, Michael brought me some pillows and blankets so I could stay in a recliner in the room. After settling in, C began having a series of V-Tach episodes and VT storms. Michael was always quick to respond to the alarms. C's condition was serious, and the Rapid Response Team was called in, too. C was given over 200mg of lidocaine and had a seizure-like response. Over the course of an hour or so, he had two cardioversions, CPR (no pulse), and was intubated. During the chaos, someone asked if I wanted to step out, but I didn't want to leave. I stood quietly and watched, making sure I was out of the way. During the calm between life-threatening events, Michael always took the time to check on me. When my husband was lying there intubated (waiting for transport to ICU), Michael told me it was okay if I wanted to talk to C or touch him. He asked if I was religious and asked permission to pray for us.
We were fortunate to cross paths with Michael, again when C was transferred from the ICU to the 10th floor. I gave Michael a big hug and thanked him for saving C's life and for making a frightening experience bearable. I will never forget his compassionate care for both my husband and me. Michael is an Extraordinary Nurse, with a welcoming smile who consistently demonstrates empathy for the patient and family during the most stressful of times. I, for one, will never forget his kindness, professionalism, clinical skills, confidence, and care.
