We have been here with our son for over a month and a half. We have had nothing but wonderful experiences from all of the nursing staff on five north. The reason I am nominating ENS Bruce is because there was a weekend that took place here Friday night, Saturday night, and Sunday morning. These few nights were the absolute most difficult nights of my entire life, and the life of my son. This is not a complaint against the doctors, but the bottom line is they weren’t seeing something very obvious that could’ve been life-threatening with our son, we were pushing the issue and being met with an unreasonable amount of resistance. ENS Bruce did an excellent job communicating with the doctors and ultimately assisting us and guiding us in initiating a rapid intervention from the ICU. Once the ICU doctors arrived, they confirmed our suspicions, and my son was brought into CT for a scan. The findings confirmed what we thought was taking place, and ENS Bruce sat by my son's side for the rest of the painful duration until the issue was mitigated. He provided my son with excellent care during this process and enough confidence for me that I was able to go and get some rest after almost 72 hours. His patient care and demeanor was top-notch, I can say this for the majority of the 5-North nursing staff as well. ENS Bruce could have just done his job alone, and it would’ve been sufficient, but that night and weekend, he stepped up and went above and beyond the call of duty. I believe he is an asset to the San Diego Naval Medical Center and should be honored for his hard work and patient care.
