It is even more difficult to take the time to really listen, empathize, and show compassion. Michael did all of these naturally and without hesitation.
We took our 16-year-old son to the ED for a mental health crisis. The evaluation/admissions process by NKHS was traumatic, but he completely calmed when admitted to Zone B because Michael was so compassionate. Michael treated him like a person who was experiencing a problem, not like he was the problem itself. He saw the good in him and treated him like a normal 16-year-old. He had been very angry, agitated, anxious, and argumentative (that's some serious alliteration), but in interacting with Michael, it's like he knew he was safe. Michael also went above and beyond in communicating with us. We had two lengthy conversations in which he really listened and gave us the information, understanding, and assurance we needed. He also helped facilitate consent to transition to another facility when we couldn't be there to physically sign. He problem solved to make it happen because it needed to happen. I know the ED sees all kinds of mental health and drug crises, and it must be difficult to keep in mind that there is an actual human behind the presenting problem. It is even more difficult to take the time to really listen, empathize, and show compassion. Michael did all of these naturally and without hesitation. We will always be thankful for this, in addition to how he defused the admissions situation. It likely kept our son from refusing the treatment he needed.
